We often think that formal family portraits are a must during your wedding day, but let me tell you more often then not, brides, grooms and other family members start getting a little anxious when it takes longer then first expected to get through these photos.

Lucky for you, I have 3 great tips to keep in mind for capturing family photos at your wedding. If you feel like you are the type of couple who would rather skip formalities and just have family photos that are fun and vibrant with life.

Tip One: Communicating the idea of unposed family photos at your wedding

Before we even make things officially, I love getting to know your vision for the day. I want to also make sure we align with the same ideas for you day because as a documentary wedding photographer, I don’t spend much time on formal photos. You hire me to capture emotional moments for your day and that is my main focus.

Tip Two: Offering Alternatives

Through candid family moments, I will reassure you that I will focus on documenting family connections organically like hugs, shared laughter, or quiet moments. I will also suggest capturing family groupings naturally during parts of the day, such as at the reception or ceremony exit, without taking time away for formal posing.

Tip Three: Creating a shot plan without formals

One month before your wedding day I send out a detailed questionnaire which also includes listing out family members you would love to have photos with. A great way to incorporate key family members naturally throughout your day could include the bride getting ready with her mom, a first look with your dad or siblings on the dance floor. I will even propose creative ways when photographing groups such as everyone walking together, sharing a toast during dinner or just simply interacting naturally in a relaxed setting.

The most important thing to remember is that as a documentary wedding photographer and bride myself, I have experienced enough weddings to give my professional opinion but also respect your vision for your day. I am here to capture your family legacy through storytelling and that is achieved through focusing on the emotional moments and meaningful connections.
